[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Süleymaniye Mosque In Istanbul

Suleymaniye Mosque ( Süleymaniye Camii ) was built between 1550 and 1557 for Sultan Süleyman the Magnificient. The mosque itself stands high on a hill overlooking the Bosphorus Strait. It was under restoration until late 2011 and now majority of its parts are open for public to visit.

In and outside of the Suleymaniye Mosque, you will find both Islamic and Byzantine architectural elements. You will see a monumental courtyard (avlu) as you might see in almost all mosques built during the Ottomans. In Ottoman Empire, only mosques endowed to Sultans were allowed to have four minarets. You will see the four minarets, one at the end of each corner of the courtyard, meaning that the mosque was endowed by a sultan.

Mimar Sinan, the architectural genius of his time, built the mosque during the years stated above. You will see how a great architecture he was as you walk around the mosque and get into it. It is a huge building but after you get into it, you feel the peaceful atmosphere inside. You will need to have at least half an hour to get more of the Süleymaniye Mosque.
